BRUSSELS — The European Union has officially moved forward with its massive IRIS² (Infrastructure for Resilience, Interconnectivity and Security by Satellite) project, securing a significant budget increase and expanding the scope of its sovereign satellite constellation. The initiative, now valued at approximately $18 billion, is designed to provide the EU with high-speed, secure communication capabilities independent of non-European infrastructure.

Following a period of intense negotiation, officials confirmed that the implementation of the satellite network has been accelerated. The decision comes as the EU faces increasing pressure to fortify its defense and cybersecurity posture against a volatile geopolitical landscape. By prioritizing sovereign assets, Brussels aims to eliminate reliance on foreign-owned systems for critical government data and military communications.

Industry experts note that the expansion plan includes both an increase in the total number of satellites to be deployed and a higher allocation of funding to ensure the project meets its ambitious milestones. A key development in the rollout is the selection of major European contractors, with Spanish aerospace firms securing pivotal roles in the constellation's development.

"The acceleration of IRIS² is a direct response to the urgent need for a secure, space-based communication network that can withstand modern hybrid threats," industry observers stated.

The European Space Agency (ESA) and EU officials are working in tandem to synchronize the launch schedules, with initial phases already reaching key operational milestones.
