EU lawmakers want to stop US from punishing international court

A group of European lawmakers is taking a stand. They want the European Union to block any plans by the United States to punish the International Criminal Court (ICC).
The ICC is a court that handles the world’s most serious crimes, like war crimes or genocide. Sometimes, the US government gets upset with the court’s decisions. Because of this, there has been talk that the US might put "sanctions" on the court. Sanctions are basically punishments, like blocking the court from using US banks or stopping its workers from traveling.
Now, members of the European Parliament are speaking up. They are telling the European Commission—the group that runs the EU’s day-to-day work—that they must stand up for the court. They want the EU to make sure that these US punishments do not happen.
These lawmakers believe the court must stay independent. They think it is important for the court to do its job without being bullied or threatened by other powerful countries. It is a big move that highlights a growing disagreement between some European leaders and the American government over how international justice should work.
