The 2026 Nobel Prize in Chemistry has been awarded to Henri B. Kagan and Kenso Soai. They were chosen for their groundbreaking work on how chemicals act like mirror images of each other.

Everything in nature is made of tiny building blocks called molecules. Sometimes, these molecules come in two versions that are mirror images of one another—much like your left and your right hand. They look almost the same, but you cannot perfectly overlap them.

This concept is called asymmetry. In the world of science, this is a very big deal. If you make the wrong version of a molecule, it can change how a medicine works or how a material behaves.

Kagan and Soai figured out how to control this process. They worked on something called 'autocatalysis.' This is a fancy way of saying they found a way for a reaction to help itself keep going and create more of the specific 'handedness' of the molecule they wanted.

Their discoveries are incredibly important for making new medicines and creating advanced materials. Because of their work, scientists can now build things on a tiny, molecular level with much more accuracy.

Experts say their research has essentially illuminated how life itself is structured. By understanding how these mirror-image molecules work, we have a better handle on the building blocks of the world around us.
