Violence is rising in southern Lebanon again. Israeli forces launched a series of airstrikes that killed 11 people, according to local health officials.
These attacks come even though there is supposed to be a ceasefire—a formal agreement to stop fighting—in place. The recent strikes are being seen as a major test for that deal.
UNIFIL, the United Nations peacekeeping group in the area, warned that civilians are paying the highest price for the ongoing military activity. The situation remains tense as people on the ground deal with the return of heavy bombing.
Meanwhile, in the United States, officials are getting ready to put new sanctions on Iran. Sanctions are basically trade punishments used to pressure a country to change its behavior. These new rules are being prepared as tensions continue to spread across the region.
International observers are worried that the fragile peace in Lebanon is quickly falling apart. As Israel continues its strikes, the future of the truce remains very uncertain.
