A major new report from the United Nations has revealed a shocking pattern of sexual violence in the war between Russia and Ukraine. Experts say these acts have been used as a tool of war since the fighting started in February 2022.
The UN has officially documented over 1,000 cases of sexual violence. Investigators found that 89% of these cases are directly linked to Russian forces.
The report details horrific abuse. In some cases, children as young as four years old have been targeted. While the abuse has impacted many women, investigators were also surprised to find that a large number of the victims are actually men, many of whom have been held in detention centers.
This report covers the time between February 2022 and July 2026. Experts say the numbers in the report likely only show a small part of the total problem, as many victims are too afraid or unable to come forward and tell their stories.
The United Nations has strongly condemned these actions, calling the situation a "shocking pattern" that has been used to hurt and intimidate the people of Ukraine. They are calling for more action to hold those responsible for these crimes accountable.
