NHS leaders in England are taking a tough new stand. They say that any staff member caught looking at a patient’s medical files without a proper work reason will be suspended immediately.
This move comes after a scandal involving a teenager who died ten years ago. It was discovered that staff members had been snooping through the teen’s private medical records.
Normally, doctors and nurses only look at records when they are treating a person. When someone looks at a file out of curiosity or to gossip, it is a major breach of trust. It is also illegal.
The NHS says this behavior is completely unacceptable. By suspending staff right away, they hope to stop people from using their access to pry into the private lives of others.
NHS Employers are also backing these new rules. They want to make sure that patient privacy is protected at all times. Officials say patients should feel safe knowing their personal health information is kept private and away from prying eyes.
