Russia and Germany meet at UN, but peace looks unlikely

For the first time since the war in Ukraine started, top diplomats from Germany and Russia have sat down to talk. They met at the United Nations in New York.
German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock spoke with her Russian counterpart, Sergey Lavrov. The goal was to tell Russia to stop the dangerous fighting. However, it does not seem like the talk led to any big changes.
Leaders across Europe are skeptical. They say that Russia is not actually trying to reach a peaceful deal. Instead, they think Russia is just using these meetings to mock the process.
Friedrich Merz, a top German politician, said the conversation shows that Moscow is not interested in serious talks. He believes Russia is not ready to end the war.
Other leaders agree. They point out that Russia has shown no sign of wanting to stop the violence. For now, the war in Ukraine continues, and officials say real peace is still very far away.
