Ukraine is running into some big problems with its new F-16 fighter jets. These are powerful planes sent by other countries to help Ukraine defend itself. Right now, there is a real fear that the program is in a 'readiness crisis.'
What does that mean? It means the planes aren't ready to fly as much as they need to. Keeping these jets in the air is hard work. They need parts, skilled mechanics, and constant maintenance. Experts are worried that Ukraine doesn't have everything it needs to keep a large fleet of these jets running safely every day.
On top of that, Ukraine has a very specific request: they need more shells. They aren't just using these jets to fight other planes. They are trying to use them to shoot down Russian 'jet-powered drones.' These are fast, dangerous flying robots that Russia uses to bomb cities and power stations.
Ukraine says they need hundreds of thousands of shells for their F-16s to be effective at hitting these fast-moving targets.
Even with these troubles, the planes have done some good work. The head of the Ukrainian Air Force recently said that the F-16s have helped stop hundreds of missiles and thousands of drones.
Still, the message from experts and officials is clear: having the planes isn't enough. Unless Ukraine can get the parts, the tools, and enough ammunition to keep them fighting, these jets won't be able to do the job they were sent there to do.
