According to the committee, this isn't just a moral suggestion. They believe there is a real legal obligation for governments to provide reparations. Reparations mean paying back or doing something to make up for past wrongs.

They point out that the way enslaved people from Africa were treated created lasting inequality. Because of this, they argue that countries that benefited from or allowed this trade owe a debt to the descendants of those who were enslaved.

This is a major step in the ongoing global talk about how to fix the damage caused by history. The committee wants world leaders to take these claims seriously and start looking at how to make things right today.
