Winter is coming to Ukraine, and it looks like it will be a difficult one. Officials in Ukraine say they have intelligence showing that Russia is planning a new wave of attacks on the country's energy system. This means power plants and electricity grids could be targeted, leaving people without heat or light in the freezing cold.
At the same time, the war is getting more intense. Vladimir Putin has signaled that Russia is ready to strike back against Ukraine. He is specifically angry about recent Ukrainian drone attacks on Russian oil refineries, which are the facilities where oil is processed into fuel. Putin told the United States, "Now it’s our turn," hinting that retaliation is coming.
Kyiv, the capital of Ukraine, is now feeling like a city on the front lines. People are preparing for the worst as temperatures drop. Experts are watching closely to see if Russia is truly ready for this phase of the war, but for the millions of Ukrainians living there, the focus is simply on staying safe and keeping the power running as the winter months begin.
