Things got tense between Israel and France this week. It started after French President Emmanuel Macron gave a speech at the United Nations. During his talk, Macron mentioned the West Bank, an area where Israelis and Palestinians both live.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was not happy with what Macron said. Netanyahu called the remarks "grotesque," which is a strong way of saying he found them absurd and offensive.
There is a lot of confusion about exactly what happened. Some reports say Macron claimed that the group Hamas is not active in the West Bank. Israel disagrees with that, saying it is simply not true. Because of this, many people in Israel got very angry.
However, a source from France later said that Macron’s words were mistranslated. They claim he did not mean what people think he said. According to the French source, the translation made the statement sound different than the original message.
For now, the two leaders are still at odds. This disagreement highlights just how sensitive the situation in the region remains as world leaders try to discuss it on the global stage.
