Puerto Rico is currently dealing with a major water shortage. Many people across the island are unable to get clean water from their taps.

In some places, entire apartment buildings are going without water entirely. For example, one building has ten families who have no access to running water at all. People are being forced to carry water by hand just to get through their daily routines.

Experts say this situation could have been avoided. There is a lot of talk about how the island could have been better prepared by collecting and storing rainwater. This would have provided a backup supply when the main pipes ran dry.

Families in places like Polk County are also calling for urgent action to help those back home on the island. Local groups and organizations, such as the United Way, are stepping in to help people who use SNAP benefits—which is a government program that helps low-income families buy groceries—get the supplies they need.

The situation is difficult and frustrating for many. As the crisis continues, citizens are asking for more permanent solutions to make sure everyone has access to clean water every day.
