Ratko Mladić has died. He was a former Bosnian Serb military leader who was convicted of genocide and other terrible war crimes. He had been serving a life sentence given to him by a United Nations court.
His death has caused a lot of anger and argument.
Serbia’s president recently criticized the UN court. He was upset that the court did not let Mladić go home to die.
On the other hand, many people who suffered because of Mladić feel very differently. They call him a butcher. They are worried that even though he is dead, some people still see him as a hero. They say his followers are trying to make it look like he won, even though he was a convicted criminal.
There is also a fight over his funeral. The Serbian government has said he will be buried with 'highest honors.' This decision has upset many families of his victims. They believe he should not be honored at all because of the pain he caused during the war in the 1990s.
While some supporters celebrate him, others are writing about the houses and the lives he could not destroy. The debate shows that even though Mladić is gone, the deep sadness and division from the war are still very much alive in the region.
