There is a major shake-up happening in Serbia right now. The country’s president, Aleksandar Vucic, has officially resigned from his job.
He is stepping down so he can run for the position of Prime Minister. The country is getting ready for parliamentary elections in October, and Vucic wants to lead his political party through that race.
To mark the start of his campaign, Vucic held a massive event in an arena in Belgrade, the capital city. Thousands of his supporters packed the building to cheer for him and show their support for his new bid for power.
With Vucic no longer serving as president, Ana Brnabić has stepped in to take his place as the Acting President. She will hold the spot until the country moves forward with the election process.
This is a big move for Serbian politics. Vucic has been a very powerful figure in the country for a long time, and this change in roles is a clear sign that he wants to keep his grip on the government by moving into the Prime Minister's office.
