UN Says Destroyed Syrian Site Was Built for Nuclear Weapons
The head of the UN's nuclear watchdog confirms the site hit by Israel in 2007 could have been used to make weapons.

New reports from the United Nations nuclear agency say that a site in Syria was meant to be used for nuclear weapons.
This site was a reactor. A reactor is a machine used to create nuclear energy. Most of the time, these are used for electricity. But, if they are built a certain way, they can be used to make material for bombs.
This facility was destroyed in 2007 during an air strike carried out by Israel. For a long time, there have been questions about what exactly the Syrians were building there. Now, the head of the International Atomic Energy Agency, or IAEA, has confirmed that the site was configured—or set up—to produce material that could have been used for nuclear weapons.
This news highlights a long-standing investigation by the UN into Syria’s past nuclear work. While the UN continues to track these issues, they noted that they are still not seeing similar progress or cooperation in their separate investigation into Iran’s nuclear program.
The Syrian government has denied these claims in the past. However, the latest findings from international inspectors suggest the evidence of the site's original purpose is clear.
