Things are tense between China and Japan right now. A top official from China, Wang Yi, just gave a serious warning to a group of Japanese business leaders.

He says that the relationship between the two countries is not doing well. He told them that ties need to be "normalized" again. In simple terms, he thinks the two countries have drifted apart and need to get back to a better, more stable way of working together.

A big part of this argument is about Taiwan. China considers Taiwan part of its own territory. Japan has recently been more vocal about its support for stability in that area. China is not happy about this. They feel Japan is meddling in things that should stay between China and Taiwan.

This all comes as the two countries mark the 54th anniversary of when they first restored their diplomatic ties. Instead of a celebration, there is a lot of frustration.

Chinese media is telling Tokyo that they already know exactly what they need to do to fix the friendship. Meanwhile, Japanese leaders are concerned that China’s aggressive stance is hurting trade and regional peace.

For now, both sides are talking, but they are clearly far apart on the issues that matter most.
