Tensions are rising between China and the European Union. Europe is looking at creating a new tool that would allow them to restrict Chinese businesses, similar to a U.S. law called Section 301.
Beijing is not happy about this. Government officials have warned that if Europe moves forward with these plans, China will likely hit back.
They are also worried about how these new rules would affect trade deals. Beijing officials say that if Europe adds new taxes or blocks their companies, it will make it much harder for the two sides to work out future trade agreements.
Even behind the scenes, the pressure is on. Beijing and Berlin recently held a video call to discuss the situation as rumors swirl that the EU might try to shut Chinese companies out of their markets.
Industry groups in China are also speaking up. They argue that if Europe forces these changes, it will break the supply chains that keep companies in both regions working together. They say it will hurt the industrial cooperation that keeps things moving between China and Europe.
Right now, both sides are stuck in a standoff. Europe wants to protect its own markets, and China is threatening to fight back if those protections hurt its businesses.
