The European Union is preparing to launch a new set of sanctions against Russia. Kaja Kallas, who leads the EU’s foreign policy, says these will be the most far-reaching measures the bloc has ever used.

The goal is to keep pressure on Russia during the coming months. While details are still being finalized, it is expected that these new rules will target key areas of the Russian economy. Some reports suggest that specific leaders within Russia’s space industry could be among those facing new penalties.

The European Union has been using sanctions for a long time to try and change Russia's behavior following the invasion of Ukraine. This new plan, expected to be introduced this autumn, is meant to be stronger than the ones that came before it.

Officials believe that by making these sanctions tougher, they can further limit Russia's ability to fund its military efforts.
