Indonesia is currently dealing with a serious wildfire crisis. The situation is getting worse because of a climate event called El Niño, which is causing very dry weather across the country. These dry conditions make it much easier for fires to start and spread quickly.

Local police are taking action against those who set fires. So far, they have arrested 72 people suspected of starting these blazes. In many cases, people use fire to clear land for farming, but in this dry weather, those small fires can quickly turn into massive, out-of-control wildfires.

Because of the danger, the government is focusing its efforts on the Kalimantan region. This area has seen a sharp rise in "hotspots," which are areas where the ground is burning. To help put the fires out, the government is using planes to drop water from the sky, especially in provinces where the situation is most critical.

Experts are worried about the long-term impact. Because this year’s El Niño is particularly strong, scientists warn that the fires could release a massive amount of carbon dioxide into the air, which is bad for the planet’s climate.

Firefighters and authorities are working hard to stop the flames, but they are fighting against both human activity and a very harsh, dry climate.
