Jamaica has officially started taking in people who were sent there from the United States. This is part of a new plan that the U.S. calls “third-country deportations.”
Here is what that means: Usually, when the U.S. deports someone, they send them back to their home country. Under this new deal, the U.S. can send certain people to Jamaica instead, even if they aren't from Jamaica.
On the first flight, 22 people arrived. Most of them are from countries in Latin America.
This move has caused a lot of talk and disagreement. Some people think it is a helpful way to manage immigration. Others are very worried about it. In fact, there is already a legal battle moving toward the U.S. Supreme Court to see if this plan should be allowed to keep going.
While Jamaica has opened its doors for this first group, the situation is complicated. Other countries have been asked to take part in similar plans, but many have said no. For now, all eyes are on the legal fight in the U.S. to see if this program will continue or if it will be stopped.
