King Charles III is getting ready for a trip to the Caribbean. Buckingham Palace says he plans to talk about the history of the British Empire while he is there.
Officials said the King wants to address the 'darkest days' of Britain's past. This includes the time when Britain was involved in the slave trade.
Even though he plans to talk about these hard topics, the King will not be offering a formal apology. Buckingham Palace made it clear that he will not 'shy away' from the history of slavery, but an apology is not currently part of the plan.
Different news groups like The Guardian, BBC, and Reuters have reported that this approach is meant to show the King is aware of the pain caused by colonialism. It is a way to acknowledge the past without taking the step of a full, official apology.
The King’s visit comes at a time when many people in the Caribbean are asking for more recognition and reparations regarding the history of slavery. By speaking openly about these issues, the Palace hopes to show that the King understands the weight of this history.
