The United Nations just put out a big new report. It says that the world is almost certainly going to get hotter than the 1.5-degree limit set by world leaders years ago.

That 1.5-degree limit was chosen as a "danger zone." Keeping the Earth below that temperature helps us avoid the worst effects of climate change, like extreme heat, flooding, and major storms.

Experts at the UN say we are going to miss that goal. They expect temperatures to rise past this point within just a few years.

However, the report is not just bad news. It also maps out a path for how we can eventually cool the planet back down. To do this, the report says it is no longer enough to just stop burning oil and gas.

Now, the world needs to start "removing carbon at scale." This means we have to find ways to actually pull the carbon dioxide—the gas that traps heat in our air—out of the atmosphere. Think of it like cleaning up a mess that has already been made.

It is a huge job. It will take a lot of work from every country, but the report says it is the only way to get back to a safer temperature.

In short: We missed the mark to keep things cool, so now we have to work extra hard to clean up the air and fix the damage.
