Pakistan’s top general is heading to Iran this Monday. The Iranian foreign ministry confirmed that General Asim Munir will travel to Tehran for official talks.

This visit comes at a tense time. Iran recently spoke out against new sanctions—which are official punishments like trade limits—put in place by other nations. Iranian officials say these efforts to isolate them will not work.

Experts say Pakistan is becoming a key player in Middle East diplomacy. By acting as a mediator, or a go-between, Pakistan is trying to help different countries talk through their problems instead of fighting.

This trip is seen as part of that larger effort to lower tensions in the region. Whether the visit will lead to any major breakthroughs remains to be seen, but many are watching closely to see if Pakistan can help settle recent disagreements involving Iran.
