Russian and German Foreign Ministers Meet for First Time in Years
The top diplomats from Germany and Russia spoke while attending a United Nations meeting in New York.

For the first time in over two years, the top foreign officials from Germany and Russia have sat down to talk. The two met on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.
Since Russia started its war in Ukraine in 2022, the two countries have kept their distance. Official high-level meetings between their governments have been extremely rare. Because of this, the short talk is being seen as a major moment, though neither side has said much about what was actually discussed.
While they were at the meeting, Germany’s Foreign Minister, Annalena Baerbock, also spoke about Russia’s recent actions. She warned that Russia’s aggression toward NATO—the group of countries that includes the U.S. and many European nations—has reached a "new level."
Even with this meeting, the tension between the two countries remains very high. The fact that they spoke at all shows that, even during a serious conflict, countries sometimes still find it necessary to keep a small door open for communication.
