Russian Couple Who Kayaked to Alaska to Escape War Now Faces Prison

A young couple from Russia made a dangerous choice to stay out of the war. They decided to leave their home behind. They got into a small kayak and paddled across the freezing cold water all the way to Alaska.
They did this because they did not want to be forced to fight in what many people call a "meat grinder" war. That is a term used to describe a battle where many soldiers are sent in and very few make it out alive.
The two arrived in Alaska safely, but their trouble was not over. After they reached the shore, they were taken into custody by officials. Because they entered the country without the right paperwork, they are now facing legal trouble.
They are currently being held in a detention center. There is a real chance they could be sent to prison for their actions. It shows just how desperate some people are to avoid being part of the fighting happening in their home country.
