Scientists just found a new type of crocodile, and it’s been hiding in plain sight for a very long time.
It turns out this ancient crocodile was tucked away inside the limestone blocks used to build the Great Sphinx in Egypt. Experts discovered the fossil while studying the rocks.
The creature is now extinct, meaning it doesn't exist anymore. Researchers were surprised to find it in such a famous place. They realized it was a species no one had ever identified before.
It’s not every day you find a new animal, especially one that has been part of a world-famous monument for thousands of years. This discovery helps scientists learn more about what kind of animals lived in Egypt a long, long time ago.
Even though the Sphinx is world-famous for its human head and lion body, it seems it had a little piece of an ancient crocodile hidden inside its walls all along.
