Spain is heading toward a big election this November, but the country’s far-left political groups are entering the race divided. Recent talks to bring these different factions together into one united group have officially failed.

For weeks, there was hope that smaller left-leaning parties would join forces to become a stronger single group. The goal was to better compete against their political rivals. However, those plans have fallen apart.

Analysts say this split is bad news for the current coalition government. When left-wing parties stay divided, it usually makes it harder for them to win enough votes to keep their seats. Instead of presenting a unified front, the different leaders have struggled to put aside their personal differences and past disagreements.

Even with the election date drawing near, the groups have not found a way to agree on a path forward. Many now worry that this lack of unity will weaken their influence in the upcoming vote.

As the parties head to the polls, they are doing so as separate groups. This failure to cooperate is being watched closely, as it will likely change how much power the left holds in Spain after the November election.
