Taiwan is planning to spend a record amount of money on its military. The government officially approved the new budget proposal today. This is the most money they have ever set aside for defense in one year.
The new plan will increase defense spending by 18 percent compared to previous years. This means that about 3 percent of the country's entire economy will go toward buying weapons, improving training, and keeping the military ready.
Why are they doing this? It is mostly to send a clear message to China. Tensions between the two have been high for a long time. China considers Taiwan part of its territory, while Taiwan acts as its own independent country. By putting more money into its defense, Taiwan wants to show that it is serious about protecting itself from any potential pressure or threats from across the water.
This move is also meant to show the United States that Taiwan is taking its own security seriously. While the U.S. is a major partner, Taiwan knows it needs to be able to hold its own.
Officials in Taiwan say this money is necessary to keep the country safe and to make sure their military stays strong. The plan is now set to go forward as part of the country's 2027 budget.
