Two twin sisters in Iran are facing a horrific situation after being arrested during recent protests. Reports indicate they were treated with extreme cruelty while in custody.
According to the reports, the sisters were tortured so badly that their own mother did not recognize them when she saw them. Officials allegedly ripped out the women’s hair and broke their feet during interrogation.
Now, the legal system in Iran has handed down harsh punishments. One of the twins has been sentenced to death. Her sister was sentenced to 25 years in prison.
These cases are part of a larger pattern of violence in the country. In a separate incident, a 21-year-old rapper named Erfan Mirzaei was also executed in the city of Isfahan after reports that he was severely tortured by authorities.
Human rights groups continue to raise alarms about how the government is treating young people who take part in protests. The families of the victims are often left without answers as the government uses these heavy sentences to try to stop further dissent.
