A major deal between the U.S. and Iran has officially fallen apart. The agreement, known as a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), was meant to keep things calm between the two nations. Now that it has expired, leaders on both sides are in a tough spot.
It has been 60 days since President Trump signed the deal, but the situation is not getting better. In fact, things have become a bit of a mess. Because the deadline passed without a new agreement, the U.S. and Iran are essentially back to square one. President Trump has even suggested that Iran should wave a 'white flag,' a common way to say someone should give up or surrender.
So, why did it fall apart? Experts say there were too many disagreements and not enough trust. Both sides feel like the other did not follow through on their promises. With the old rules gone, the world is watching closely to see what happens in the Strait of Hormuz, a very important narrow waterway where ships carry much of the world’s oil.
Because the talks have stalled, other countries are trying to step in. European nations are now getting involved, hoping they can help fix the relationship and prevent a larger conflict.
Right now, nobody is sure what the next step will be. Diplomacy—which is just a fancy word for talking things out—is currently the only path forward, but it is moving very slowly. The U.S. and Iran remain at a standstill as the international community hopes for a peaceful solution.
