Our planet's coral reefs are in big trouble. Scientists are warning that the world’s oceans are warming up way too fast. Because of this, the coral doesn't have enough time to heal itself.
Coral is a living thing that makes up reefs. These reefs are like cities under the sea, providing a home for thousands of types of fish and other sea life. But when the water gets too hot, the coral gets stressed. This causes it to turn white, which is called 'bleaching.'
Normally, coral can recover from bleaching if the water cools down. But lately, the water is staying hot for too long and heat waves are happening back-to-back. The coral is getting hit by heat stress before it has any chance to get healthy again.
Experts from all over the world say there is no doubt about it: human-driven climate change is the main reason for this heat.
If the water doesn't cool down, these reefs may reach a point where they can never come back. This would be a massive loss for the planet because reefs protect our shores from big storms and help keep our oceans healthy.
Right now, the message from researchers is clear: the reefs are running out of time.
