Can History Stop Big Tech? Lawmakers Look at the Old East India Company
A historian says the way we broke up a giant company from the 1800s could be the secret to controlling modern tech giants.

A long time ago, there was a massive business called the East India Company. It was so big and powerful that it basically ran entire countries. Eventually, it got too much power, and the government had to step in and shut it down.
Now, some leaders in the U.S. government think we should look at how that company was handled. They believe it could be a roadmap for how to deal with today’s giant tech companies, like Google or Amazon.
Historians say the problem is the same: when a company gets so big that it controls the rules of the game, it hurts everyone else.
Lawmakers are currently trying to figure out how to stop tech companies from having too much control over our lives. They are looking at the lessons from the East India Company to see if they can use the same ideas to keep these tech giants in check today.
The goal is simple: make sure these big companies don't get so powerful that they can ignore the rules or hurt competition. It’s an old trick for a brand new problem.
