China’s ambitious environmental initiative, aimed at combating desertification and climate change through the planting of 78 billion trees, has hit an unexpected snag: significant disruption to the regional water cycle. While the massive reforestation project was designed to act as a 'green wall' to stabilize soil and capture carbon, new findings suggest that the density and type of vegetation may be causing more harm than good in specific ecosystems.
Researchers have noted that the rapid expansion of forests has increased evapotranspiration—the process by which water is transferred from the land to the atmosphere by evaporation from the soil and other surfaces and by transpiration from plants. In regions where water is already scarce, the intensive water usage by these newly planted forests is drawing down groundwater levels, reducing the amount of water available for local agriculture and natural runoff.
Ecologists warn that the monoculture approach—often relying on fast-growing, non-native species—has failed to mimic the complexity of natural forests. These 'green deserts' may stabilize soil in the short term, but they struggle to maintain the delicate moisture balance required for long-term ecological health. As water tables drop in areas surrounding these reforestation zones, experts are calling for a shift in strategy. Future efforts, they argue, must prioritize indigenous species and lower-density planting to ensure that climate mitigation strategies do not inadvertently exacerbate local water insecurity.
