European Court Tells Turkey to Free Jailed Activist
The European Court of Human Rights says Turkey must release Osman Kavala, calling his life sentence unfair and part of a wider pattern.

A high-level court in Europe has issued a strong warning to Turkey. The judges say Turkey needs to let Osman Kavala out of prison immediately.
Osman Kavala is a well-known businessman and philanthropist. He has been in jail for years. He was even given a life sentence.
The European Court of Human Rights says his time in prison is wrong. They believe the Turkish court system has a "systematic problem." This means they think the courts are not being fair to people like Kavala on purpose.
This is not the first time the European court has asked for his release. This is actually the third time they have told the Turkish government to let him go. The court says his conviction was not based on solid evidence and that he was treated unfairly from the start.
Human rights groups, like Amnesty International, are calling for his freedom right away. They say the situation shows that the legal system in Turkey is not following international rules.
Turkey has not yet agreed to listen to the court's order. Kavala remains behind bars as the international community watches what happens next.
