Middle Eastern nations are shifting their strategic focus toward Beijing, hoping that China’s deepening economic and political ties with Iran can translate into tangible diplomatic restraint. As regional security concerns intensify, Gulf states are testing the extent of China's influence over Tehran’s regional policies.

Historically, the United States has served as the primary security guarantor for the Gulf monarchies. However, the perceived shift in American foreign policy priorities has prompted nations in the region to diversify their diplomatic partnerships. China, which relies heavily on Middle Eastern energy imports, has positioned itself as a neutral arbiter, most notably facilitating the normalization of relations between Saudi Arabia and Iran last year.

Despite this, experts remain divided on whether Beijing has the political leverage to curb Iranian-backed militant groups or influence Tehran’s nuclear posture. While China maintains significant economic leverage through its purchase of Iranian oil, it has traditionally preferred a policy of non-interference, focusing on 'developmental diplomacy' rather than direct security arbitration.
