Europe is currently asking a very big, uncomfortable question: Is the United States still a reliable friend?

Leaders across Europe are feeling nervous. They are worried that if Donald Trump or similar leaders take control, the US might turn its back on its longtime allies. There is a real fear that the NATO alliance—the group of countries that promises to protect each other—could be a target.

Because of this, Europe is at a crossroads. Many people are asking if there is a "third way." This basically means they want to know if Europe can stop relying so much on the US and start standing more on its own two feet.

Some experts say that when it comes to world politics, countries care more about "strategic necessity" than they do about shared values. That is a fancy way of saying countries will do whatever they need to do to survive and stay safe, even if it means changing who they work with.

Essentially, the message from many European capitals is clear: Europe cannot afford to become less important. They know they need to figure out their own path, because they cannot be certain that America will always be there to help as it has been in the past.
