The Israeli military has officially launched a criminal investigation into the death of 5-year-old Hind Rajab. She died in Gaza earlier this year.
For months, the case has been a major point of anger and sadness. Hind was trapped in a car after Israeli tanks moved into the area. She had called for help, and audio recordings of her panicked calls to emergency workers became world news. A team of paramedics was sent to rescue her, but they were also killed. For a long time, it was unclear exactly how they died.
Now, for the first time, the Israeli military has admitted that they fired on the car Hind was in. They say this new criminal investigation will look into the details of what happened that day.
Even with this news, Hind’s family is not satisfied. Her mother has spoken out, calling the investigation a "whitewash." This is a term people use when they feel an organization is just pretending to look into a problem to make themselves look better, without actually wanting to find the truth or hold anyone responsible.
Hind’s mother says the investigation comes too late and she does not believe it will lead to any real justice for her daughter. The case remains a symbol of the heavy toll the war in Gaza has taken on children and families.
