Italian Court Convicts Three Egyptian Officials for 2016 Kidnapping of Student

An Italian court has reached a verdict in a long-running case involving the death of an Italian student named Giulio Regeni. Three Egyptian security officials have been found guilty of kidnapping him in Cairo back in 2016.
Regeni was a doctoral student who moved to Egypt to study local labor unions. He disappeared in the capital city of Cairo in January 2016. His body was found a week later showing signs of severe torture. The case has caused serious tension between Italy and Egypt for many years.
While the Egyptian officials were convicted of kidnapping, the trial did not lead to a murder conviction. The Italian judges acknowledged the case has been difficult because the Egyptian government has not fully cooperated with the investigation.
Even after this ruling, it is unclear if the men will face any actual punishment. Egypt has previously stated that it does not recognize the Italian court’s authority over its own citizens. The Italian government is continuing to push for justice, while some political groups in Italy have raised concerns about how this will affect the ongoing relationship between the two countries.
