A massive rescue mission is underway in the Xizang region near the China-Nepal border following devastating floods and mudslides.
More than 2,000 rescuers are currently on the ground. They are searching for survivors in areas buried by thick, heavy mud. The work is described as extremely difficult due to the rugged terrain and the unstable ground.
Officials report that 261 foreigners from 23 different countries are still missing after the disaster. Authorities are doing everything they can to track these people down.
There is some good news: experts say the risk of a nearby lake bursting has gone down. Earlier, people were worried that a lake held back by debris might break open and cause even more flooding, but that danger has eased for now.
Dramatic videos have surfaced showing local police officers risking their lives to lead people away from border posts to safety.
President Xi Jinping has ordered a full survey of the area’s glaciers. Experts want to understand if shifting ice played a role in the disaster and if more danger is coming. For now, the focus remains entirely on finding the missing and getting people to safer ground.
