Things are tense in the Strait of Hormuz right now. This is a very narrow and important stretch of water that many oil tankers use to travel.
Recent reports confirm that ships have been attacked in the area. In one of these attacks, a crew member was killed. The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) said a ship was hit by an "unknown projectile," which is basically something fired at the ship that caused damage.
Because so much of the world’s oil travels through this narrow path, these attacks have made people nervous. As a result, oil prices have started to climb. When tankers are at risk, it makes it harder and more expensive to move oil around the world.
Iran is stepping up its efforts to control the strait. While some reports suggest a tanker was seized, the situation remains fluid. Even with these reports of violence, former President Donald Trump stated that the strait is "open and operating."
Right now, countries and companies are watching the area very closely. Everyone is worried that if these attacks continue, it could cause bigger problems for the world economy and energy supplies.
