South Africa is dealing with a sudden and terrifying rise in mass shootings. Across the country, people are being killed in large numbers, and local neighborhoods are living in constant fear.
Recent attacks have been particularly brutal. In just two separate incidents, at least 28 people have been killed. Another attack at a local tavern left 18 people dead, turning a place meant for relaxing into a scene of tragedy.
Why is this happening now? Experts and authorities point to a flood of illegal weapons. Guns that are not registered or legally owned are pouring into the streets. This makes it much easier for criminals to carry out these attacks.
Police are struggling to get the situation under control. Families in townships, which are crowded residential areas, say they are scared to go out. The rise in violence has shattered the sense of safety in these communities.
Right now, the government is under pressure to figure out how to stop the illegal gun trade and bring peace back to these neighborhoods. For now, the country remains on high alert as officials work to understand the root of this deadly trend.
