A very important photographer has died. He was the only person with a camera at the Sharpeville Massacre. This event happened in South Africa in 1960.
At the time, the government in South Africa had a system called apartheid. This was a system that treated Black people much worse than white people. People were protesting against unfair rules that forced them to carry papers everywhere they went. These papers were like ID cards that restricted where they could move.
Police officers opened fire on the crowd. They killed 69 people. It was a terrible tragedy.
Because this photographer was there, he was able to show the world what really happened. His pictures proved how violent the police were. These photos helped people all over the world understand why they needed to fight against the unfair system in South Africa.
He captured a moment that changed history. His work made sure that what happened at Sharpeville would never be forgotten.
