You never know what is hiding under your feet. A man in a small Finnish village was out using his metal detector when he made a discovery that is making history. He found over 4,000 silver coins from the Viking Age buried in his backyard.
The coins were stored inside two containers made of birch bark. These containers were buried about 39 feet apart from each other. Experts are calling this a "double hoard," which is a fancy way of saying it is a collection of treasure that is very rare and unlike anything they have seen before.
Finding this much silver is a big deal. The haul weighs about 40 pounds. It is not every day that someone goes for a walk in their garden and ends up with a massive piece of history.
The discovery is officially breaking records. Because the coins were kept in those special bark containers, they have stayed in good shape after 1,000 years in the dirt. Researchers are now busy studying the find to learn more about the people who left this silver behind so long ago.
