Finland has officially finished building its new border fence. The project covers 200 kilometers, or about 124 miles, of the land bordering Russia.

Officials say the fence is a key part of protecting Finland’s border. Since Finland joined NATO—an alliance of countries that work together to protect each other—the border has become very important.

Along with the new fence, security in the area is getting a boost in other ways. For instance, Sweden has announced it will send military aircraft, known as Gripens, and a naval ship to help support Finland and the region.

The project was meant to make the border easier to watch and to control movement between the two countries. Work on the fence has been ongoing for a while, and its completion marks a major milestone for Finland’s national security.
