There is a mystery happening in Canada, and it involves a floating island.

People recently noticed a small island pop up in a lake. It looked like a normal patch of land with trees and plants. But then, it disappeared. It didn’t sink into the water—it just wasn’t there anymore.

Now, scientists and nature watchers have figured out what happened. Satellite images show that the island didn't just vanish into thin air. It moved.

After disappearing from its first spot, the island traveled about 20 miles across the water. It basically drifted like a giant boat made of land.

How does an island just float away? Experts say this happens because of something called a 'peat bog.' This is a thick, swampy layer of soil and dead plants that can break off from the shore. Because these chunks are full of air and trapped gas, they can actually float on top of the water.

When the wind blows or the water levels shift, these floating chunks can drift around the lake, making it look like an island is appearing and disappearing.

It sounds like something from a movie, but it is just nature being a little weird. For now, the island has been spotted in its new home, but nobody knows if it will decide to pick up and move again.
