A massive 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck eastern Indonesia, leaving a trail of destruction. At least 68 people have died. The disaster happened right as the country was trying to celebrate Independence Day.

Thousands of people are now displaced. This means they have lost their homes or cannot stay in them because they are too damaged. Many of these people are waiting for emergency supplies like food, water, and medicine.

The earthquake has caused great fear, especially among children. Schools have been hit hard, too. Officials say the education of more than 8,000 children has been interrupted because their schools are either destroyed or unsafe to use.

Amidst the tragedy, there are small stories of hope. One mother gave birth to a baby during the chaos of the earthquake. She told reporters she is very grateful that both she and her baby are safe.

Help is currently being sent to the area, but the situation remains difficult for the thousands of families now living in temporary shelters. Aid workers are working to provide clean water and blankets to those who have lost everything.
