Things in Haiti have been very dangerous for a long time. Gangs have taken over much of the country, and the government is struggling to keep people safe. Now, El Salvador has decided to step in.
President Nayib Bukele, the leader of El Salvador, is sending 2,000 of his soldiers to help out. Bukele is famous for his tough-on-crime policies back home. He managed to clear out most of the violent gangs in El Salvador, and now he is taking that mission abroad.
There is also a more urgent reason for the move: four Salvadoran soldiers went missing, and the government hopes to find them while helping stabilize the area.
This is a big move for a few reasons:
1. It changes the security situation in Haiti. Haiti has been asking for international help, and this is a direct way to get more boots on the ground.
2. Former U.S. President Donald Trump has expressed support for this plan. Having his backing makes it a major topic in international politics.
3. Experts are watching closely. Some wonder if Bukele’s methods—which include very strict policing—will work in a place as complicated as Haiti. Others are just glad to see someone stepping up to try and stop the chaos.
For now, the world is waiting to see what happens when these troops arrive. It is a risky move, but it shows how worried countries are about the ongoing violence in Haiti.
