A significant legal process is underway at Guantanamo Bay. Officials have started picking a jury for the trial of a man accused of planning the attack on the USS Cole.

Back in October 2000, a small boat filled with explosives blew up next to the USS Cole, an American Navy ship, while it was refueling in Yemen. Seventeen sailors were killed in that attack. It was a major event that shocked the world.

Now, years later, the person accused of masterminding that attack is facing trial. This is the first time a death-penalty case like this has reached the jury selection stage at the military prison in Guantanamo Bay.

'Jury selection' simply means that lawyers and officials are interviewing a group of people to see who will be fair and impartial to serve as the jury. These people will eventually hear the evidence and decide if the man is guilty or not. If he is found guilty, the trial could result in the death penalty.

This trial is a big deal for the families of the victims who have been waiting a long time for justice. It is also a very complicated case for the military court, as it involves evidence gathered a long time ago and strict rules about how these types of trials should work.

The process of picking the jury is expected to take time. Once the jury is set, the trial will move forward to hear the facts of the case. We will keep you updated as more information comes in.
