Millions of Kids Lose Food Benefits as Funding Worries Grow

More than 1.2 million children have been taken off the SNAP program since last July. SNAP is the government program that helps families pay for groceries.
Experts say this is a big problem. Many families rely on this help to put healthy meals on the table. When children lose these benefits, they are more likely to go hungry.
There is more uncertainty ahead. Funding for these food programs faces a deadline this September. If the government does not act to secure the money, even more families could lose their help.
Different states are seeing the impact in different ways. For example, Tennessee could be stuck with a bill of up to $243 million a year because of a new federal rule.
Some leaders are speaking out against the cuts. Lawmakers and food bank directors have criticized recent changes, saying they hurt the most vulnerable people in the country.
As it stands, families are left waiting to see if their support will stay, grow, or disappear when the funding is reviewed this fall.
