New files show Spain knew about border crisis before it happened
Spanish intelligence warned of a massive wave of people crossing into Ceuta, but the event still caught officials off guard.

Newly released documents show that Spain’s intelligence agency knew a major border crisis was coming.
They had warned the government that a large group of people was planning to storm the border in Ceuta. Ceuta is a small Spanish city located on the northern coast of Africa. Because it is Spanish land, it is a common place for people to try and enter Europe.
Even with these warnings, the surge happened anyway. Thousands of people crossed the border in a very short amount of time. This led to a major political mess between Spain and Morocco.
For a long time, the government did not talk about these warnings. Now that the papers are public, it is clear that officials had an idea of what was about to happen.
Experts say these files prove that the authorities had intelligence on the plans before the situation turned into a crisis. However, it is still unclear why more was not done to stop the mass crossing before it became a reality.
